
The world’s human population consumes 624.9 million terajoules (592.3 quadrillion BTU or 173.6 trillion kWh) of energy each year, per 2022 estimates. Oil and coal are by far the largest sources of this energy, combining for ~58% of all energy consumed (oil is the larger of the two).
